Tennessee Town Parks
From the creation of the NIA's first greenspace in the early 1980s, the Lane Garden, which filled two vacant lots at the northeast corner of SW 12th and Lane Sts., providing greenspaces for neighborhood residents has been a priority.
The creation of the Aaron Douglas Art Park in the late 1990s provided another greenspace accentuated by a mural honoring Mr. Douglas and his artistic contributions. And Faith Temple Church of God in Christ's acquisition of properties at the northwest corner of SW Lincoln and Munson Sts. enabled the construction of a basketball court for neighborhood residents and others, as well as playground equipment for youngsters.
As the NIA moves forward in 2014 and beyond, there may be other opportunities for greenspaces, which are valuable in providing residents calm, peaceful places for rest and rejuvenation, in addition to providing amenities for neighborhood residents of all ages. And from a land use perspective, greenspaces also provide viable options for vacant lots too small for other types of development.
